Preparing for your Post-Holiday Move

The holidays in Chicago are filled with family, friends, and warmth. There is nothing better than enjoying cherished traditions and meals with your loved ones. If this will be your last holiday season in your current house, you’re likely feeling bittersweet. Any Chicago moving company will say the same story - moving can be a massive adjustment. But if you’re moving soon after the holidays are finished, the season of giving may quickly become the season of stress! Lucky for you, getting ready for the holidays and your soon-to-be move can be easy peasy if you take the necessary time to properly prepare.

Get Organized

Getting organized now will save you a ton time and stress when your moving company gets to your house! We’re sharing tips to get you organized and on track this holiday season:

  • Print a calendar that you’ll only use for moving related tasks. Circle your move day. Next, count backwards from that day and create a rough outline of your major tasks and what you need to pack. Making a timeline gives you a sense of accomplishment and keeps you from losing your focus in the flurry of activities in December.
  • If you’re receiving lots of boxes from online packages, keep them! Use these boxes to pack your household goods. If these boxes also have bubble wrap, peanuts, noodles, paper or some other packing materials, save them! They work well to provide additional support and protection for your delicate décor pieces.
  • Gather lots of boxes, tape, markers, etc. When you have all your materials handy and kept together will help you be ready whenever you get the inspiration to pack anything!

Decorations

Opening that dusty box and seeing sentimental decorations for the first time in a year is a great feeling. The holidays are officially here! Seeing our favorite decorations, ornaments, or keepsakes fill us with nostalgia and excitement for the season ahead. But as you start decorating, the time is right to think ahead about how you will be taking it all down. Not to overlook holiday festivities, but you’ll want to be more prepared than in previous years to pack your decorations back up. Your breakable keepsakes, ornaments, and snowglobes are typically stored in sturdy storage boxes which sit in your basement, attic, or garage. But are they safe for moving? Do not create additional work for yourself at the end of the season. Creating a plan for how you’ll take down and then carefully pack your decorations will save you time and headaches when getting ready for your move. Here are some general tips:

  • Have packing supplies ready when taking down your Christmas tree. Carefully wrap your ornaments and fragile ornaments with tissue paper or unprinted newsprint before placing them into a dish pack.
  • Garlands and wreaths fit great into wardrobe boxes!
  • Menorahs and kinaras should be wrapped carefully with tissue or newsprint, then packed into a book carton, or inside of a dish pack with similar items.
  • Wardrobe boxes are fantastic to safely pack artificial Christmas trees. Stack two on top of each other for taller trees!

Holiday Meals

While the family snoozes away in tryptophan bliss, take this time to wash and pack any seasonal dishes and servingware. If you have holiday cutlery, casserole dishes, or sets of china, washing them and immediately packing them away is a great use of your time. Those items are only used once a year, just pack them properly for moving right away!

Gifts

There are some things to ponder when thinking about any new gifts or purchases. If you are moving near the holidays, you’ve probably already had your moving company provide an estimate, which could be time or weight based depending on the type of move. If you received or given any bigger gifts that could impact your quote, make sure you get in touch with your moving company right away. There might be extra special disassembly, services, or costs for increased/decreased weight or time than your initial estimate. Some common gifts needing extra care are:

  • Exercise bikes and treadmills - especially the ones that have video screens, these are hot holiday gifts! Keep in mind, because of their size and servicing required to secure the electronic components, you will want to notify your moving company if you added one of these!
  • Game tables – ping-pong tables, pool tables, and poker tables might add weight or time to your move. If you have a slate pool table, it will require special service before it’s moved. It will also need refelting after the move.
  • Lithium batteries- power tools, cameras, hover boards and more tend to use lithium batteries these days. Though moving companies can usually move these batteries without issues, you will want to be sure the battery is properly disconnected and stored. Lithium batteries cannot be sent in an air shipment, if you’re moving internationally.

Bonus tip: If you’ve been given access to your new place ahead of the holidays, you might have friends and family ship any gifts to your new home. That would prevent your moving company from handling them, removing the need to update your quote.

Get nostalgic

As long as your current home is still decorated for the holidays, enjoy all your favorite holiday traditions, take pictures, and make festive treats. You’ll be glad you have these memories and pictures to remember for many years. Planning a farewell holiday party can also be a wonderful send-off. Invite neighbors and loved ones you may not see as much after your move for one last holiday shindig.
